Sunset Presbyterian Student Ministries is excited to invite you to a day of golfing and enjoyment at the 9th Annual Golf Tournament. The past several years have proven to be incredible days of golf and great prizes … and this year promises to continue the tradition. Along with 18 holes of golf (with sponsorship throughout), all golfers will go home winners … with prizes and gifts for everyone! There is no better way to support our Mission Team to Honduras … and have a great day of golf on one of Portland’s premiere golf courses.

TOURNAMENT HIGHLIGHTS
• Four person scramble format (you can pick your team or just sign-up on your own)
• Awards to best teams, worst team, and teams inbetween.

On June 19, 2010, over 20 of Sunset Presbyterian’s high school students and adult leaders will be leaving for two weeks of ministry on the island of Helene, located just off the eastern coast of Honduras. These student missionaries will partner with the resident missionaries (part of a group called “Mission Encounters International”), offering them support, encouragement, and resources to strengthen their ongoing Christian work. It is a once-in-a-lifetime, life-changing experience for our students.

Helene, Honduras offers a unique cross-cultural experience. It is a small island some thirty miles off the coast of Honduras in the Caribbean Sea. One might expect a South American culture but instead, most of the islanders are from an African-Carib ethnicity. Since Helene and the rest of the Bay Islands are a former British protectorate, the islanders prefer to speak English.

Helene can be described as a “third world culture.” There are neither cars nor roads. No electrical or phone lines, no public water works or sewer systems. There is no industry or tourism on this island. The only government presence on the island is a small three room, Spanish-speaking school. Most of the islanders live in small shanties. They are able to live off the bounty of the ocean and jungle.

This is a very close-knit culture where everyone has extended family. The islanders are welcoming of visitors. Our host in Helene is a Christian organization called Mission Encounters International. They have been on the island for over ten years. They currently offer outpatient medical services, periodic dental clinics, emergency transportation to inpatient medical centers, lodging facilities for fifty volunteers, an eighty student English speaking school, clean drinking water, assistance and discipleship programs to the local churches, and ongoing VBS activities for the young children.
