Volunteer FAQ'sWhat is Sunset ESL? ESL means English for Speakers of other Languages – At Sunset, this is an outreach service for families who need help. Improving English language skills is the gateway to better jobs, housing and education. What does a Sunset ESL Volunteer do? Volunteers may greet students, provide hospitality by preparing for the coffee break, teach a class, lead group activities, assist classroom teachers, help students register, tutor individual students or interview new students. When is ESL? Volunteers may serve during a variety of times. While most of Sunset ESL’s programming is on Saturday mornings, tutors meet with students at their convenience. Members of the Leadership Team make preparations during the week. An abbreviated Wednesday evening course may be offered, depending upon volunteer availability. Hospitality and Database volunteers also serve at their convenience. Where is ESL? Tutors meet with students wherever is convenient for both parties. Saturday classes are held at Sunset in the East Wing. Whom does ESL serve? Immigrant and refugee families in our community participate at Sunset ESL. We serve adult students learning English and their children. English skills range from absolute beginner to intermediate ability. Most of our students are immigrants in the local area. More than a dozen languages are represented by Sunset ESL students. Who are ESL volunteers? Anyone who speaks English and has a heart for missions and a passion for helping others is welcome to complete an application. Volunteers should be able to attend one orientation session before beginning their service, and regular on-going training throughout their service. Why ESL at Sunset? The vision of this ministry is to help people meet their immediate, physical needs. This is accomplished by language learning while experiencing Christ’s love and compassion. When Sunset ESL students have enough food to eat, a decent home to live in, and a livelihood with means to survive, they will remember Sunset ESL and seek to fulfill their spiritual needs as well. How can I get involved? Contact the program director, Nanci Leiton, by phone or e-mail. Arrange to observe a class, or plan to come to the next Volunteer Orientation.
