Summer 2008

A SUMMER BEYOND OURSELVES

LOVING Our Community SERVING People SHARING Ourselves

Summer 2008 is almost here! Most of us are looking forward to a time of relaxation, long awaited sunny days, and the water (need we say more). It is a time to “refresh and regroup.” But for some, inside our walls and community, it is life as usual and that means just trying to survive one day at a time.

For this reason, we’d like to invite you to join us in asking, “Where can I make a difference this summer by going beyond myself, volunteering somewhere to just help people?” You might even have a friend, family member or neighbor you’d like to share this pursuit with along the way.

Just click on the opportunities listed below and check them out. We know you’ll find one or several opportunities where you’ll enjoy serving. Join with us in going beyond ourselves by loving our community, serving people, and sharing ourselves!

June 7 - Sunset Community Bike Safety Fair
The Annual Sunset Community Bike Safety Fair is a sanctioned Portland Rose Festival Event for this centennial year. It is focused on elementary age children. Attend one of many bike safety classes throughout the morning; get fitted for new bike safety helmets for the entire family ($5ea).

June 21 - All Church "Serves Up" Day
Grab your tools, instead of your surf board, and join us for the first annual all church "Serves Up" Day. We will be going out into the community as one big wave to make a difference in the lives of those all around us. In partnership with Cityfest 2008, we are all going to go beyond ourselves and begin a wonderful culture of serving our community in big and small ways all over the city, from feeding the hungry & helping the homeless to building houses, medicating the sick and cleaning up our own environment. One tool you want to make sure you have when you hit the waves is LOVE, because God calls us to LOVE your neighbor as yourself. Let's go love our neighbors and have a great time doing it. To volunteer contact Lisa Symmonds

June 29 - July 3 - Middle School Camp
$299 Tadmor Camp in Lebanon Oregon. Join us this summer as we head to a new destination. Students will be treated to disc golf, water slides, paintball, canoeing, mini RC track, night games, swimming, engaging worship, talks that make sense and much much more! For more information or to volunteer please contact Kembe Staley or visit www.sunsetpres.org/students

July 12-16 (Session One) and July 16-20 (Session two) - High School Houseboat Camp
Grab a friend and come join hundreds of other high school students for five days of sun, music, wakeboarding, water skiing, team competitions, tubing, engaging talks, and fun with your friends. Our annual high school summer camp will again take place on the houseboats of Lake Billy Chinook in Central Oregon. All incoming 9th-12th grade students are invited to go “OVERBOARD” with us. Cost is $400, and registration opens Sunday, April 20th!

August 7-8 - The Leadership Summit
Come join us as more than 70,000 men and women gather together for a worldwide event, dedicated to strengthening and sharpening your leadership gifts and abilities. Together we’ll unite our hearts and minds to keep dreaming new dreams, and to gain new skills for making them a reality.

August 19-22 - Children's Day Camps 1 and 2
"The King has lost His Rhyme"
An unforgettable royal time awaits our Sunset children and their friends this summer as we anticipate worshipping the King Most High. Sunset Kids Camp is Tuesday August 19 - Firday August 22 and has a preschho program (4's and 5"s) along side the elementary (Kindergarten - 5th grade) program. We'll need your parayers, support and hands to serve as we again expect over 1000 kids.

August 22 - Car Show

August 22-23 - Portland City Fest
- It's a party with a purpose! The festival at Waterfront Park will offer multiple presentations of the Gospel, each focusing on a specific audience, culminating with a powerful invitation to receive Jesus Christ from one of the world's most respected spiritual communicators, Luis Palau.

- The festival is free and open to everyone. It will feature top name Christian and contemporary artists, family activities from sports and face-painting to Veggie Tales, professional action sports demos for teens and young adults, and much more.

- The event provides a non-threatening opportunity for Christians to invite their unchurched friends and family to enjoy the day together. There, they will hear the Good News!

- Portland CityFest is uniting our diverse Christian community for a common purpose--to reach out with God's love for His glory. It is an entire movement to love and shape our community for good!

“We will need many volunteers willing to serve as counselors during these events. Watch for more specifics about this exciting outreach training in the weeks to come.”
